The Gecko

I know it’s been forever since I last posted and this will probably seem like a very random and insignificant post, but I’m feeling inspired and this is the result. So, today I am trying to get some serious writing done and decided on a change of scenery to get the creative juices flowing. (This seriously helps me when I get stuck in a slump, especially if I can find somewhere outdoors or without Wifi.) Today I didn’t go very far, in fact I only went to the kitchen. It’s a spot I don’t usually write in and, despite the fact that I’m taking a short break to write this post, it’s actually going very well.

I decided to to write this post about half an hour after making a new friend. As I turned up my music, basked in the view from my window, and allowed my fingers to fly across the key board, I became increasing aware that I was being watched! My gaze was drawn to a crack between the window and frame where two tiny reptilian eyes peered at me. A tongue flicked and my heart stopped. Oh lord, there was a baby snake in my house. The tiny head disappeared and I sat frozen.

What to do? I didn’t want to kill a baby, but I didn’t want a snake living in the kitchen either. The head poked out again and winked at me, teasing. Slowly it started to emerge from the crack and I stood, hardly aware of my reflexive reaction. The tiny head was out, long body following and then…was that a foot? The air rushed out of me, ‘oh thank God!’ That one tiny foot was enough to reassure me and I sunk back into my chair.

After that I began laughing at myself. How silly I was that something as insignificant as legs would decide whether I feared this minuscule creature or not? Now fully emerged from his hiding place the tiny animal, that I now recognized as a gecko, was smaller than my thumb. Pushing my chagrin away, I watched as he maneuvered around the window sill one timid movement at a time, so much more terrified of the giantess in the room than she ever was of him.

I eventually decided I wanted to know what species he was since I haven’t seen any like him around. His pinkish copper skin was dotted with brown and his tail was striped. I wouldn’t call him beautiful next to the vibrant green and blue geckos I am familiar with, but he was intriguing and dare I say adorable? (yes, I know I am ridiculous)  After a very short search I decided he was a Mediterranean House Gecko and most likely a baby, (insert awww here).

Now confident and inspired by this surprise guest, I set about serenading him with the soundtrack from Once. Whether or not the gecko, who I have yet to name, enjoyed his impromptu concert I don’t know, but he sat their staring at me for the longest time during Steve Kazee’s rendition of Gold. Unfortunately our interaction was shorter lived than I would have liked as he again vanished into the crack, but I have great hopes of seeing him around in the future.  If anyone has suggestions for what to name my new little friend leave a comment! So see how random this was? Now it’s back to the wonderful world of fiction for me, until next time, ciao!
